Maaike will approach today’s themes from a grounded professional perspective, sourcing from her experience as an art psychotherapist, lecturer and multidimensional energy medicine practitioner.
We see gifted students and practitioners who seem to not yet have a solid internalised ethical compass, unwittingly perpetuating dubious practices and creating unsafe environments, stepping in all the proverbial pitfalls that are part and parcel of working with people.
What does it mean when people haven’t had to study ethics in their practitioner training, where does this show?
And what has this meant for us within DharmaSTARS?
Explore the parameters with us as we delve into a range of evocative ethical topics, woven together by anecdotal examples and observations by both Maaike and Padma Khandro:
– From fraternising with your fellow students to the phenomenon of ‘maternal transference’
– Trauma bonding, ego, parts and ‘security blankets’
– The difference and overlap between ‘working therapeutically’ while learning a new modality and ‘being in therapy’, and when to prioritise one over the other.
– The tension between comfort and growth in effective therapeutic or educational spaceholding and the role of self reflexivity therein.
We’ll explore the different roles we inhabit in these spaces, as students, clients, therapists and teachers/ mentors, and the perpetual tantric dance between these at any given time. What happens when the lines get blurred and how easily is this done? Something can be completely valid and appropriate in one context and a great big no-no in another, at times even showing signs of psychopathology lurking in the subconscious shadows.
With this presentation and the additional brainstorm session, we aim to shine an inquisitive light on these topics and help you to find the right order and perspective to start creating your own ethical template for impeccable practitionership.

Many people have been moving through profound initiations that have tested their authenticity and challenged superficiality on energetic, karmic, and professional levels.
We continue to meet gifted practitioners who have not yet invested in their ethical and practical development, often underestimating the depth of training and real-world experience required. Without solid foundations, progress can stall because, like Saturn teaches, this work cannot be bypassed if we want true discernment and adaptability.
This day retreat offers grounded professional and spiritual insights for those ready to deepen their practice with the Dharma Stars team and guest Katie Brockhurst.
I have particularly learned and deeply appreciate ethics as an expression, or manifestation of natural law, of how things are, and so operate as reference points to reality, mediating what’s ‘unethical’ in a way that has potential to restore a personal and shared culture based on natural law, rather than, as a practitioner, adjust one’s behaviour within colonial culture to produce ‘success’ in economic terms, or operating within legislation. I can fully see now, I’m not conscious of the ethics codes I agreed to in my yoga teacher training or shamanic trainings and need to review these.
One of the beautiful things to come out of these trainings, is to recognise one’s dharma isn’t necessarily through a human-facing therapeutic job title and role, but nevertheless necessitate an ethics context in order that encounters with others, whether non-physical beings, indigenous peoples, or those considered ‘asleep’ or ‘unconscious’ are met in equanimity, in right relation, including a more symmetrical perspective to observe established cultural and multidimensional structures, so revealing prejudices and loyalties which, are themselves, colonial perspectives.
Maaike de Haan
Maaike de Haan is an art therapist and holistic practitioner with a foundation in energy medicine and teaching background in higher education, who has devoted her life to studying and working within the Healing Arts.
Maaike has a longstanding history and relationship with professional ethics and Saturnian application, from her early days as an art therapist-in-training through to being an educator teaching social work and art therapy students in the Netherlands, and later on during her long-term apprenticeships in tattooing and multidimensional practitionership, internationally. Maaike is currently working as a registered art therapist, taking part in regular supervision and peer-to-peer intervision and has taken part in several international art therapy ethics discussions.
Through her years of professional training and lived experience, constant application and ongoing curiosity and exploration on many levels, Maaike brings a rich and multi-layered approach to what is often seen as a ‘dry’ and sober subject. She’s on a mission to transform popular opinion and is passionate about weaving her manifold experiences together for the benefit of our DharmaSTARS’ students and ethical practitionership as a whole.
Maaike weaves a fusion of modalities, anchoring her natural intuitive, empathic and multidimensional gifts in psychotherapeutic training and initiations into ancient wisdom and energy medicine lineages, resulting in a grounded holistic and trauma-informed approach.
Maaike is a Quantum Transfiguration practitioner (level 2), Reiki Master [Usui/ Tibetan tradition] and Sekhem Master/ Teacher initiate, who has studied specialisms in Energetic Hygiene & Clearings, Spaceholding, Earthkeeping and Death, Dying & Transitions, with her teacher Padma Khandro Victoria Sinclair – who she has been travelling and working with extensively in Mexico, Asia and Europe for the past 4+ years. She is currently developing Quantum Art Therapy as a modality, under the supervision of Victoria Padma Khandro – since 2022.
Currently in a triple strong Saturnian time astrologically, Maaike is personally and professionally both ready and rejoicing in the opportunity to be a part of our wider Saturnian Goat Brigade efforts within the platform!
